Banbury Rally Weekend 20/21 June 2015

Show Report

Our best show yet, despite the rain on Saturday, was the view of our Banbury team, and many of the competitors and Judges! I have received many, many emails of thanks and Face-Book has been buzzing with many of Michelle’s wonderful photos and kind comments from competitors and judges alike!

Last year we were pleased to accept 210 entries over the two days of rally, but this year it was an amazing 328 from 184 teams, an increase of just over 56%; Saturday again being the most popular day. High numbers of entries for Levels 1 and 2 classes meant these were split into two, and so gave more opportunities for competitors to gain a rosette.

Fortunately our fantastic team of helpers grew in number too. Nikki Kirk bravely acted as Chief Steward on both days, even though this meant she could not work her own dogs. Jeanette and Carol in the kitchen were able to cope with the numbers of hot drinks required and delicious home-made cakes were much in demand (praise for Carol’s Victoria sponge and Michelle’s amazing Rally cup-cakes made it onto Face Book!)

Sally and Mike were able to open a field to provide extra car parking at our usual, and well-loved venue, the Dog Training Barn. Steiner organised the early car-park stewards to get nearly 100 cars, vans and campervans up and parked before 9am each morning. It was lovely to be greeted by smiling, welcoming faces, even in the rain! There were tasks for everyone; from expertly scoring and scribing for judges to checking the loos and cleaning up at the end of the show. My thanks to our fabulous team for their help and commitment in making it a wonderful, friendly show for everyone.

There was a broad representation of different breeds of dog participating in Rally on both days; everything from a miniature long haired Dachshund to Bernese and a Rhodesian ridgeback as well as a multitude of cross breeds. And it wasn’t just the collies picking up the place rosettes! Talking of collies, my special thanks to Kate and John Wykes, who made a large financial contribution to the weekend of Rally through their multiple entry fees and who sent in the best ever entry forms; all typed up with handlers names clearly given for each dog. No chance of misspelled names and a dream for me as show secretary to process.

Our thanks to the wonderful judges, who came from all over the country; the furthest being Plymouth and Blackpool! Several judges were also Kennel Clun Rally Working Group Members and they made themselves available for questions, comments and suggestions from us all. I was informed that these will feed into their next meeting and hopefully inform future changes and developments in Rally.

The huge increase in numbers this year shows that Rally Is gaining in popularity and growing fast. I have discussed increased numbers with the owners of the Dog Training Barn and it seems unlikely that there is room for further increases in entry numbers, so perhaps we will need a new venue next year?

My thanks to all to supported and helped at the Rally weekend 2015

Banbury Open Rally Competition Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 June 2014

Report by Karen Kendall, Competition Secretary

Perfect weather in a perfect venue with wonderful people and their dogs for two whole days of Rally competition, it doesn’t get much better than this!

Rally is really taking off in a big way so Nikki and I thought it would be a great idea to run two days of competition this year, instead of the previous one day show. With the full support of our Club Committee and many of our members I think we delivered our best Rally show yet. There were 83 entries on the Saturday and 78 on the Sunday, with seven classes per day, so lots and lots of rosettes to be won!

Our Rally members had benefitted from Nikki’s training sessions and all the regulars got qualifying rounds. Gillian Baird, Hazell Burton and Nikki Kirk won several place rosettes each on both days, so congratulations on some excellent rounds (please see results below). The fun competitions were well supported and some new handlers and their dogs were delighted to try out the new sport and to win a rosette. They declared it a great introduction into Rally.

The wonderful weather helped everyone feel relaxed, and I had many kind thank you emails afterwards from competitors who had enjoyed their time with us. There were many other touches which made the weekend such a success and so enjoyable, and these were largely due to all our members who helped in so many different ways. There were fabulous home-made cakes and teas and coffees served with a friendly smile. We had the paddling pools out again for the dogs to cool off in, and these were very popular. Crofts Pet Foods very kindly gave prizes for all the first place winners, so our thanks to them. And not forgetting the new toilets (thank you Mike and Sally Stephens). Last year it was portaloos but this year we had spotless toilets in a new toilet block, with lovely clean towels which were changed every hour! One competitor even took a photo, saying these were the cleanest and nicest loos she had seen at any dog show or event!

There were a few hiccups, mainly due to last minute changes due to late entries received, but these were handled for the most part with skill and humour by our team of experienced judges. I have received some kind emails from our judges thanking us for being looked after so well, and for the beautiful personalised thank you cards, which were made by Di Assheton-Bowtle.

I would like to finish as always with thanking all our members who contributed to making this event such a success. Thank you for helping to set up on the Friday evening, and for baking cakes, shopping, taking photos, serving teas and coffees, adding up the scores, writing certificates, scribing, organising the car park, lending gazebos and other equipment and for hugs and support and lots more. And to let you all know that three people commented to Nikki and I that they wished they lived closer to Banbury to come to our club, as all the people are so friendly!

Cheers Karen
